The story
The Marble Creek fire has closed Route 9, dispatch says shelter in place, and Jordyn hears boots on the stairs of Tower Fourteen. It's Maren Cole from Tower Eleven, the woman she has barely spoken to off the radio in three years. At lookout training in Missoula, Maren fell asleep against her on a barracks roof, and Jordyn counted nineteen shooting stars rather than move. Then Maren pulled away without a word. Now there is one glass cab, one spoon, a radio check every thirty minutes, three years of wanting, and nowhere else to go.
